Bringing Car BACK to canada

Bringing Car BACK to canada

Postby jawahar » Thu Nov 19, 2009 7:39 pm

I moved to US (NC) in 2000 and also moved my car with me (at the time it was not paid off)
It was paid off in Nov 2003
Now Nov 2009 I am moving back to Canada.
Problem I do not have a title as in Canada there are no Titles. Ford Credit Canada simply sent me aletter stating that it is paid off. NC DMV have told me that they issued a title and sent it to Ford Credit Canada, who have claimed no to have received it (back in 2000)

Ford Credit Canada can send me a Release of the Lean on my Car, will that be enough to cross the border.. The US side requires a title but Canada had no title system.

On the Canadian side I spoke to the Canada Border agency they told me that if the car was originally registered in Canada and I have the original registration then I can simply just go to the Border and tell them that I am bringing the car back. - is this true do I still need the US side export document or similar paper?

When they say registration in Canada they mean the plates - correct?

What Can I do to get the title as Canada has no titles?

Aany help is appreciated

Whne leaving US with any car, it is a 2-step process: exporting it from US and importing it to Canada.

The CBSA agent gave you correct info on your car since it was originally from Canada -- as long as you did not have to modify it to originally import it to US.

It is unfortunate the NC DMV and Ford Canada dropped the ball on the Title. I suspect that Ford canada didn't care for the title, so didn't place much value on keeping it safe.

For US export, I think you should be able to explain your circumstance with the release letter, but the prrof will be in the pudding.

by registration in Canada, I believe they mean the ownership paper. If you still have a copy of that, it will prove that it was originally a Canadian car.

The only "ownership paper" I ever had in Canada (QC) was the dmv registration, which went with your plates. It denotes legal possession of the car, but not necessarily ownership, since this car could be leased - and was in this case. I believe this is the same for all other provinces.

US customs accepts the notion of registration equalling ownership on the way into US, so I don't see why they wouldn't on the way out. but it sure would have been nice to have gotten a hold of that title.

This summer we will be returning our car to Canada from Mexico where we have driven it since January 2005. The car was originally purchased and registered in Ontario. However. its Ontario registration expired in September 2006 and cannot be renewed without an emissions test in Ontario. Arriving in Ontario we can obtain a ten day temporary registration to allow for an emissions test.

My understanding is that US CBP will allow us to bring the car into the USA as tourists and that we can drive the car across the USA to Canada, even though the registration has expired. The car is not registered in Mexico. It is circulating under a temporary import permit which will expire when the car leaves Mexico.

I believe we can purchase temporary car insurance in the USA for our trip to Canada. Our Mexican insurance is not valid in the USA.

I would be grateful for any views on whether what I have written about entering and crossing the USA is correct.

Thanks and regards,
