Bringing my car to Canada HELP!

Post Sun Sep 28, 2008 5:02 pm

I am a Canadian citizen. I have lived in the US for the past 4 1/2 years. I bought a new car in the US 4 years ago. I am flying back to Canada in the next couple of weeks to return live there permanently. One of my relative wants to fly down here in the US and drive the car up to Canada so as to bring it back to me.

I called RIV and the car satisfies the safety/environmental requirements in Canada. After that I am at lost. I have no idea what I should do or not do. I browse and I browse but can not find the answer as to what I have to do to bring this car back. What paperwork? When should it be submitted ? To whom? How much should I pay? To whom? When?

Any suggesting will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

You need to declare it to CBSA on Form B4A when you arrive, doesn't matter if it's accompanied or not, but you must get CBSA to sign off on that form when you move back otherwise you will have to pay duty and GST/PST on it.

www.riv.ca explains most of the rest of it, you have to make an appointment with CBP at least 48 hours prior to the export from the US and it has to be declared to them so they can sign off on it before CBSA does the import. Once it's imported you take the release and the B4A to your local CBSA office so they can assess duty, which will be zero. Probably a good idea for whomever is bringing it up to have a copy of the approved B4A.
Steve.
