Bringing your Dog abroad

Post Fri Jul 29, 2011 4:41 pm

Hello,

I am new here, I am planning on getting the 2 year youth work permit and moving to either Nottingham or Leeds next July.
However I am mega stressing because I have a 2 year old black lab and need to bring her with me. Has anyone ever done this and do you have advise for bringing her and if it would be impossible for me to find a place to live with a dog?
Bare in mind, all of her shots will be up to date including her rabies vacine and so on.

Help me?

Hi! You will need to check out the pet travel scheme set out by Defra.

Your dog could potentially be held up on quarantine for up to 6 months. I've looked into importing horses to the UK (if I were to end up staying there, I'd want to bring my horse over) and it looks easier to bring a horse into the UK than it does for a cat or dog.

Hi,
I brought two cats with me when I moved to the UK. It was fairly straight forward but a lot of things need to be done in Canada if you want to avoid the quarantine in the UK. Now the quarantine process can be done in Canada and your pet can stay at home. Check out the Defra website. It is very helpful. Also check with your vet. They will know what is needed. You will have to fill out a pet passport form and have it signed by your vet as well as by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

We brought our dog over from Canada but my parents were planning on staying in the UK. We sent the dog over before we flew out so she wasnt in quarintine for a long time, when we got in the UK.
This was in 95 so things may have changed since then.
If you are planning on renting a home in the Uk it can be hard to get a let with pets, but Nottingham does have lovly parks to walk around. My mom brings our newer dogs up for a walk around Notts.
