Hi Everyone,
I was born in Canada but am a British Citizen through my parents. I would like to now move to the UK for a few years with my 7 year old daughter. I have been told I need to apply for a "Settlement Visa for a Family Member" and provide all necessary documents which is fine.MY QUESTION.The financial Evidence, they said I need to provide this but did not go into detail just said I need to show I can support her over there. What type of evidence are they looking for?, how far back do they want evidence from?
Thanks for the help

Hi Lesley,

Do you have your citizenship already? Or are you going over under a visa of some sort like an Ancestry Visa or Right of Abode? Depending on which way you are going, I think different rules apply. I found the UK Border agency the most helpful for clarifying this kind of information.

If you do need to prove this, there isn't any magic formula that they are going by, you just need to show any evidence that would proove:
-that you are very employable,
-that your potential salary would be enough to cover you and your daughter, and
-that you are unlikely to have to resort to public funds.

I would suggest any of the following:
-A letter of intent to work in the UK or a job offer if you already have one. (If you don't, I am told it helps to sign up with a temp agency before heading over and see if they will get you a letter)
-Your resume
-Copies of your degrees or any courses you have taken
-Copies of your recent bank accounts
-If you are going to live somewhere where you don't need to pay rent, get a letter stating that (shows your costs in the UK will be less), or evidence that any other typical costs would be less than normal
-Evidence of any other means of income (ie. rental income, interest from investments, etc.)
-Your 2007 tax return to show how much you made last year or copies of recent pay stubs
-Letter of employment from your current/recent employer.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info.

I am a British Citizen so that helps a bit. I don't have a place to move to as of yet, I am working on that as well as finding a decent school for my daughter, they kind of go hand in hand as we are pretty flexible what area we want to live in (Cambridge area preferably)and I am sending my resume's to Temp agencies as we speak. I have been a stay at home mom for 6 years working from home so that won't really benefit me by showing my Tax Claims (ouch!). I do have some savings and a client that will confirm my employment and salary (work that I do for an out of the country company). My concern is how much do they consider acceptable to live on until i'm settled as I will be paying for a flat (aprox 500 pounds/month). The Settlement Visa is an expensive one and takes a long time so I want to make sure I get it all right the first time, the school I have inquired about told me to make sure I have a stamp in my daughters Passport that says "to accompany parent" not 6 month casual visa.
Thanks again for any help
