British Accent

Post Mon Jul 18, 2011 1:28 pm

Hi

I'm from Toronto and recently moved to London UK. I'm not sure if it's me but sometimes I have difficulty understanding their accent and the way they speak. Did you ever encounter this communication barrier ? Also at front they seems ok but they're not.
Happy to hear from you, thanks.

Local accents around London can be strong and difficult to follow if you're not used to them, but it'll come in time. Guess you should have watched Eastenders back home!

LOL it doesn't help that they have their own slang that is completely different than here! When I visited in March, there were a few things that I said which people raised their eyebrows about but I did the same with them (I said something about wearing pants not thinking that it referred to underwear, etc.).

I remember meeting some people from the north of England (can't remember exactly where) when I was in Ibiza and I honestly could not understand what they were saying - it was like they were speaking another language. But, that is the fun in moving to a different place.

You'll get used to it, honest.

When I moved to the UK 5 years ago, I had some difficulty understanding some accents, but now I have no problem understanding even the strongest of accents.

I struggled on the phone at first until my ear got used to it. It is English though so you will be fine after a couple weeks.

I still have a hard time calling pants "trousers" after 4.5 years!

It's neat to hear all of the different accents in one area. I too made the mistake of saying "pants" instead of "trousers". I was warned about it, but completely forgot until I said it in public and got weird looks (thankfully they knew what I meant). I'm sure I will keep making those mistakes

I remember last time I visited there were a few peculiar phrases that I had difficulty understanding.

In telling time, instead of saying, "half past _______ (hour)" they just say "half _____ (hour)"
so 9:30 would be "half nine". It's kind of confusing at first when somebody tells you to meet them at half nine.

isn't it? = innit?
they say "do you reckon?" or "I reckon…" quite a lot.
also to show up somewhere they say "rock up".
So you can rock up at half nine and it's completely legitimate!

The most bizarre phrase I've heard is "a stone cold bonker cert" which means a sure thing. Also, "muck ups" and "cock ups" are mistakes.
As far as the accent goes, it would help me a lot if the British would pronounce their R's! :)
