British/Canadian dual citizenship

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Hi there, I dont want to steal the thread but I have a similar question. My wife was born here in the UK but her mother was born in Canada and lived there till she was in her 20's, her father was UK born but moved to Canada for a number of years. They both came to the UK about 28 years ago. Now me and my wife are thinking of emigrating to Canadabut I just wondered is my wife eligible for a dual citizenship? Sorry if this is obvious, we're just starting out on this adveture and know nothing at all about the system.

Since your wife's mother was born in Canada, she should qualify for Canadian citizenship by descent.

However, wikipedia has some info about needing to apply before your 28th birthday to qualify. I can't find that on the immigration Canada website so not sure if that's valid information or not, but I'd have a look more around the CIC website.

Hey there, I am living in Saskatchewan and have been since 1968. I was born in Leeds england and immigrated here. I ahve only a Canadian passport.

1. Am I still a British Citizen
2. Do I need a visa to work or stay in Britain
3.What about my kids are they considered citizens althogh they were born in Canada, do thye need special visa etc. to study or live/work in Britain.
4. What are th benfits of having both passports?

1. Yes
2. No. You would be wise to get your UK passport, but it would not be required.
3. Yes, right now, they are UK citizens by descent. They would need to apply for their passport to live and work in Britain. Alternatively they could get an ancestry visa instead, go live in UK, and then apply for UK citizenship otherwise than by descent after living there a few years. The advantage of the second method is that their UK citizenship woul become transmissable to their foreign-born children, which would not be the case if they took thir UK citizenship right now through you. The disadvantage is that they would not be full UK citizens until that time.
4. UK citizenship allows one to live and work anywhere in the EU, without additional visas

I'm in the opposite situation and wondered if anybody could help with my issue.

My Dad is canadian, has canadian passport citizenship etc., with right to abode in the UK. My mom is British and I have british passport but want to move to Canada with my Dad and his side of the family as they are intending to return early next year, is it worth me applying for dual nationality as don't want to lose any of my rights here in UK.

I also don't know whether I am eligible as I am 20 and have never lived there. Have been on cic website and the british equivalent but they tell me the benefits not what I am entitled to if anything at all.

Hope someone can help thanks.

You are Cdn, by birth, through your father.

You would need to apply for a citizenship card from canada, and then a passport.

You lose nothing from UK.
