British/Canadian dual citizenship

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

British/Canadian dual citizenship

Post Mon Apr 20, 2009 2:07 pm

My mom was born in England but moved to Canada as a baby, I was born in Canada in 1988 and am looking to get dual citizenship. I'm pretty sure that I'm eligible but I'm not sure how to go about applying. I went to the Ottawa British High Commission website but didnt get any info to help me. I also have a sister that is under 18, is it easier for her to get it now?

Anybody know what do to?

You need to be registered: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travelling-and ... ster-birth

Then you can apply.

http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-el ... y-am-i.asp

The above website has all the info on it, the difference is that you apply through the British High Commission in Ottawa. And then you get entered onto the NIR after they interview you.

You do not need to be registered before getting a passport. Easier to just apply for the passport.

Note that there is a new interview component for first time passport applicants, which may require you to travel to the embassy.

I'm looking for some guidance if anyone can help. I'm Canadian born 1979 and my Father is British Citizen. I'm looking to get dual citizenship if possible, but all the website links say if your mother is a British Citizen does this mean i don't qualify?

Were you born in wedlock? If so you are likely a British citizen by decent.

I have a similar question. Both my parents were born in England and my mom came over to Canada when she was a baby. I was born in Canada in 1983.

I have a friend who is going to England on a teaching visa and I would like to go with her.

Am I able to just apply for my English passport and go over there and work?

I'm having trouble finding information on this.

Assuming your parents were both born in England AND were British citizens, and they were married when you were born, then you are British. You would just need to apply for a passport through the British high commission.

You will have to provide some documentation about your parents, such as their marriage certificate and (maybe) their British passports.

There are lots of teaching jobs in the UK.

Hello all,

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I have a similar question and since I am a bit daft when it comes to matters of citizens.

I am a Canadian born to a British father who came to Canada at a relatively young age (around 12, I think). I would like to apply for British citizenship in addition to my standing Canadian one.

Now, according to the Home Office's passport page, I should be eligable because I can prove legitimate descent from a British father.

So, to my understanding, I can just apply for a British passport? Looking at the application form, there is a section entitled "Now, according to the Home Office's passport page, I should be eligable because I can prove legitimate descent from a British father.", which seems to require my father's information. If I fill this out and send in all the required documents, will I be good to go?

I assumed I'd have to register as a British citizen or something to that matter, but if all I have to do is apply for a passport, that makes things a lot easier.

If anyone could confirm/clairfy, that would be much appreciated!

Hi,

I am Canadian (born 1977) with British parents and am starting to look at dual-citizenship as we will be moving to Europe for a few years.

My mother told me that when I was a baby she listed me on her British passport (was required to provide my birth cert. and such) - does anyone know if this means I am already registered? or would I still have to go through the registration process?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

All the answers are in this thread further up. Also this: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/briti ... passports/

Basically you're a British citizen by descent, you just need to provide the relevant evidence with your passport application. The problem is that the new biometric/NIR/RFID passports require you to physically go to an interview if it's your first application. In Ottawa, unless something changed lately.
