British Citizenship for my 2 Daughters

Post Tue Aug 23, 2011 12:27 pm

I haven't had time to search the site so I appologize if this has been answered. I have been trying to search for the answer but the websites all sounds so confusing and I am getting nowhere.

I am a british citizen living in Canada. I have a british passport. My two daughters who are 6 and 16 months have Canadian birth certs. Can they get british citizenship/passports? If yes, how do I go about it? Their father is Canadian.

I thought I had found the proper information only to realize I had not.

Thank you for any help.

as long as you were born or naturalised in Britain, your daughter are UK citizens by descent.

So they just need to get a passport? I have a british passport and birth certificate. I was born in Cyprus when my parents were in the airforce.

It depends on what type of British citizenship you have. If your parents weren't in the military, I would think you would be british by descent which is not transmissable.

But, I'm pretty sure given their status, that you have what is known as UK citzienship otherwise than by descent, like someone born in UK, which is transmissable to one generation of non-UK-born children.

I have a british birth certificate. I was born in Cyprus because my British parents were serving in the RAF there. I lived in englad until I was 20.

Thanks, i just find it all so confusing. I really appreciate your answers. The reason I mentioned my birth cert is because it made me think and I checked it to make sure it didn't say anything weird lol.

Well, it is strange that you would have a british birth certificate since you were not born in Britain. What you might have is a registration of birth abroad, which is proboably not quite the same thing.

A true british birth certificate is a copy of the town registry entry for your birth in that town.

Again, your is just not a typical situation; I can only extarpolate what the vast majority of countriesd do under these circusatnces, which is deny loacal citizenship to children of foreign military/diplomats, and grant citizenship to children of military/diploamts posted abroad.
Since I doubt you have cypriot citizenship, I'm 99% sure that you have British citizenship otherwise than by descent. (which is the distincion that will get your daughters UK citizenship.

The simplest thing to do is to file a C1 to get one passport (I would try one child at a time, for cost) and see if it works, and then do the other.
