British Passport

Post Sun Aug 14, 2011 1:12 pm

Hello,

My husband was born in Winnipeg in 1953. His mother was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Will he be able to get a British passport? We would like to move to England for a year or two to travel and thought it would be easier to stay longer if he has a passport.

Thanks for any help.

We're afraid your husband is not British as children born abroad to British mothers before 1983 are not born British citizens. Registration is possible only for those born betwen 1961 and 1982.

Your husband may have the right of abode, but it would only allow him to come live in the UK without any particular visa. If you want to come to the UK with him, you'd have to get a visa of your own.

visawise,

In 2009 (The Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act ) the rules on registration were changed to include those born of british mother BEFORE 1961 as well.

See current form UKM.

references to the period between 1961 and 1982 have been removed.

Under the new rule chages for those born before 1961

My wife born in Canada in 1947 to a British born mother went through the application May 2010 & received her citizenship September 2010.

It takes about 6 months. Applications now go to Washington

Passport follows after the registration as a British citizen

Good luck to you
