British products unavailable in Canada

Post Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:02 am

Hello
I am visiting some Canadian friends just after Christmas and I am really excited. I am English and I think the weather will be a shock for me. I would like to bring my friends some presents from England that they would not be able to but in any Walmart. I really like the people I am visiting and want to get them something unique to UK - can anyone offer me any ideas? Thank you in advance for any advice.

food items (care packages) always goes down really well, not chocolate though & usually not clothing either. Or, something that you think will hit 'back-home' with your friends.. its the old ' we cant get this in Canada' idea

If you were visiting me, I'd ask you to bring

the day that you leave - two or three daily newspapers

Cheese (its allowed) ... any British type that you like is OK with me. Cheese, especially the British type cheeses are very expensive in Canada

http://www.beaware.gc.ca/english/brirape.shtml#a2

HP sauce (the medium size plastic bottle), although we can get it here (expensive), the taste & limited varieties available here in Canada are different to none.

Very dark christmas cake (the dark rich fruit cake) from Asda, Morrisons or Tesco (freeze the day before packing it in your case)

At least three medium sized Christmas pudding for one-pound each from the pound shop or the 99p store

Malt loaf ... four or five of those (freeze before packing)

Do not bring any fruit or meat products

I was embarassed to find that Heinz products are American and Canadian - I thought Heinz baked beans was English as they are part of the full english breakfast!! Shhhh... don't tell anyone I was that daft. I have already sent them Marmite and they are addicted now so I will take some more. I thought maybe some Branston pickle...
I am so grateful for your suggestions!

last time I was over, I was in the B&M store & picked up a jar of Branston pickle for 99p. I know its way cheaper in the UK than here. Also found it in the pound shop

On Marmite - there you go. Just make sure (couple of jars) are well packed in a siutcase that goes in the gargo hold of the plane, otherwise if its in your carry-on, the xray/scanner will find it as you walk through security & for sure be taken if off you.

Last trip over I had a large jar (1kg) of pickled onions, which was confiscated as I took it through security

So, watch what you carry on the plane with you

On beans, take a 4 cans (blister pack) of HP baked beans, none of that American brand suff eh!

Pity you cant smuggle in Walls brand frozen banger/sausages for me ... lol

Suggeston, see if you can also get a couple jars of Robertsons Marmalade (ginger or thick cut fruit) ... maybe store brand will do.

A lot of people like Crosse &Blackwell (or heinz) salad cream once they try it. Limietd availability in Canada perhaps.

And Jacobs cream crackers and Jocobs club orange cookies (back after a retirement).

I'm with portico on the beans. UK canned beans are NOT like North american versions. You can debate which is better, but they are not the same.

I am loving the suggestions. I bought some HP sauce in plastic bottle last night sooo good with sausages. I have been told that they are dangerously low on marmite so I will be sure of a welcome! I am really excited about going and I really want to try Tim Horton's coffee as my friend raves about a "double double" and Timbits. Thanks for telling me about putting it in the plane hold - I do not want to be done for condiment smuggling! Please don't stop with the suggestions - I am writing them all down. Getting more and more excited and counting down the days.

OK, so the list so far, is as follows (you should be overweight on the luggage by now)

-HP sauce
-Cheese - try to find out which type they like. 150/200 gram block - pre-wrapped (freeze before packing in your suitcase)
-Jacobs club biscuits (orange & mint)
-Cream crackers
-Marmite
-Branston Pickle
-HP baked beans (4-pack) small tins
-Marzipan, from either Asda, Tesco or Morrisons - get a block 454g (1 pound) ... trust me on this one
- Robertsons Marmalade (ginger or thick cut fruit)
-Rich dark fruit cake (Xmas cake), with or without icing
-A stick/bar of mint seaside type rock ... that will go over well
-Jaffa cakes - its a must do & if you cant get the original - no name brand will do

On your way back home, remember to take back a 1kg of Tim Hortons coffee

Thanks for all the help. They liked the cream crackers. You can get HP sauce there. The salad cream was a mystery to them and they did not like Branston pickle. I made them marmite addicts so when we saw it in a supermarket in Canmore we bought a lot!
Christmas cake and mincemeat - something so traditional in the UK was tested with suspicion... so funny. They were had been tested enough so said they would try the marmalade when they were feeling more brave.
I really enjoyed trying all the different foods. I went into Fuddruckers and loved having my food served on a tray (the tray was the plate) and you chose the size and I had rootbeer (sort of tasted like cloves to me). I loved having picked carrots with my meals and the dairy queen deserts were an experience- a small size just was enormous to me.
I am a Tim Hortons fan now and miss having a double double so much and a breakfast sandwich on biscuit (a biscuit is something totally different to us in the uk).
I had such a warm welcome from the Canadians and tried not to leave with a gambling addiction as I had my first taste of reservation owned casinos.
I am sad that I can't get chocolate turtles here and I miss the odd 'oh Henry'.
I went to london and was shocked to find a Tim Horton's franchise in a little 'Spa' shop just off Piccadilly Circus in London. I took pictures of me outside enjoying it to send back to Canada - such a tourist!
So thank you for all your help - my Canadian friend is coming over here now soon so I am frightening him with curry and my mums steak and kidney pudding....
