buying a car in US and visiting Canada

Post Wed Jan 05, 2011 10:14 pm

Hi! I am a canadian citizen, who will be working in the US (Ohio) under a H1B visa. I will be obtaining an Ohio driver's license and then buying a car there (i.e, it will have an Ohio license plate). My question is, will there be any problems when I drive across the border to Toronto, when I want to go back for weekend visits? Thanks for everyone's help!

No problem. You live in US, so you can drive US car into canada. It;s Cdn residents who have problems driving a US car into canada.

Can anyone point me to a specific reference for this? I just encountered this very situation on my last trip back to Canada. I currently live in NJ on an H-4 visa. My husband has an H1B visa. We purchased a car here almost 2 years ago, and have been using it to drive to Montreal and Toronto to visit family, and it has never been an issue. Two weeks ago on my most recent trip to Montreal, I was told by the border agent that it's "illegal" for me to drive a US-plated car across the border. I was stunned as noone had ever told us this before, but he let me through with no issues since I was visiting my ill father.

I would like to have some kind of documentation to show the customs agent if I ever encounter this situation again!

Thanks!

If you LIVE in canada, it is ilegal to bring in a US registered car.

However, gently remind the junior officer that you LIVE in US, on H4, and thus can do what you want with US car.
