Buying a Car in US w.out WORKING VISA

Post Fri Nov 21, 2008 8:54 pm

I'm currently a Canadian University Student, i'm planning on moving to the states before i'm given a working visa to live with a friend (not working until i actually get the visa) but I'm looking to purchase a car - do i need a visa before i can buy a car in Florida? With or without a visa i plan to stay in the US for a 6 months.

- if i don't have a visa and come back after 6 months, how long must i be in Canada before i can return to the USA?

Thanks,

Viv

Not quite sure what you're on about, are you saying you're going in as a student or a visitor?

As a visitor they'll let you in for at most six months. Unless you've already got the work situation sorted out, beware of the fact that getting work authorization is not a simple or quick process. You cannot legally enter the US to look for work either.

Anyone can buy a car in the US, you don't even need to physically be there. It's getting a driver's licence and insurance which is the tricky part.

Florida is pretty laid back about issuing DLs to Canadian citizens, all you need is proof you're Canadian, such as a passport, birth certificate or citizenship certificate. However it will only be valid for one year unless you have evidence you're allowed to stay longer than that.

Sorry for the confusion - i'll be going as a visitor - not working just staying with friends as a gap year if i'm unable to recieve a visa.

I plan on going early july and then returning to Canada for christmas -- if i choose to return to the united states as a visitor, (with no intention of looking for work),after spending a short amount of time in Canada in December and January, is there a time period that i have to wait before i re-enter the US?

thanks for all your help it's greatly appreciated

Rule of thumb is you should stay out of hte US as long as you were in it. So if you come here next July and stay 6 months, you should return to Canada for 6 months.

Yes, some people will just go back after a "turn around" but I wouldn't recommend it. Especially after passports become a requirement to enter the US from any port.
