buying a motorhome in Calif. Can I register it there?

Post Wed Nov 05, 2008 9:02 am

I am looking at buying a motor home in California and would like to leave it there for a year or 2 while I travel around a couple of months each winter. Is it possible to have it plated without returning to Ontario right away? If so what all is involved?

You can't register it in Ontario without importing it, because you can't swap the title for an Ontario one until the import is approved. You'd have to import it then take it back.

You can register it in California though, insurance might be tricky with an Ontario DL.

Just to elaborate a bit on Steven's answer, you can't register it in Ontario without actually bringing it there because to register it, you need to 1) bring the vehicle to the US border to export it, 2) bring it to the CND border to import it and 3) have the vehicle inspected in Ontario before you can register it. (for an imported vehicle, you'll have to get it inspected by CanadianTire to make sure it satisfies Canadian standards, get an e-test and get a safety test). It's also important to mention that not all motorhomes (less than 15 years old) can be imported to Canada - if you check 'w w w . r i v . c a', there's a list of makes/models that you can import.
