Buying Permanent home in US

Post Sun Nov 13, 2011 11:02 am

HI there,

My husband and I are entertaining the idea of buying a ranch in the US. We are both Canadian citizens and are not sure if this is even possible.
The ranch would obviously generate income. We wouldn't be working for someone else. We would be working for ourselves? Does a US Resident need to sponsor us in to the country?
We have 2 small children as well.
Would they be able to attend school ect?

I have a home based business the the head office operates in Us, Canada, Australia and UK. Would I be able to work this business in the US. Currently, I can sponsor and work with people in any of the above countries? So would there be a difference if I was living in the US?

Any help would be appreciated.

You cannot work in US, even for yourselves. You can buy the property and have someone else do the work, but it can't be your permanent home in any event -- you would have to live outside US.
You would need a US employer (not yourself) to sponsor one of you -- and it would be for professional work, not ranching.
Soon, there might be a law that allows you to stay in US for upto three years at a time if you buy over $500K of property in US, but that still would not allow you to work there.
