Can I live in UK after my YMS Visa Expires?

Post Thu Sep 08, 2011 7:18 am

I have come to the UK on a YMS visa, to be with my boyfriend who is a British Citizen. I need some advise on what to do when my visa expires? Is there a different visa I can apply for if we are engaged, or unmarried?
I know a few people who have got married on a quick whim just to stay in the country, or have gotten pregnant...But I am not wanting to take that type of risk, and would like to do things the proper way.
I would like to live here, but am not sure if I need to be sponsored by a job, or need to some how prove that my boyfriend and I are together without being married?
Thanks for any input

there are other threads on this forum that have dealt with this - you may want to search under YMS

That said - from the UKBA website under the policy statement in section 35 it would appear [from reading this] that when the 2-year YMS visa expires you must return back to Canada - no over stays, no switching visa category or extensions.

Given that you are in a relationship, once you are back to Canada you need to apply for another visa under a different category such as spousal or partner ...

If you have lived with your British boyfriend for 2 years (and can prove it), you can switch to unmarried partner visa but that's the only category you can switch into from Tier 5 YMS. You can't extend your stay or switch in-country into any other immigration category.

nothing wrong with returning to canada to apply for the unmarried partner visa, but make sure you start keeping records of your living together.
