London is way more expensive than even Vancouver, though, so just the cost of getting around in London will eat that up. For comparison, I am told that "unqualified" teachers' salaries start at around £15,000. And that's if I can even GET it, with the anti-America prejudice being extended towards Canadians these days. Or maybe it's always been that way and my uncle just forgot to fill me in on that little detail before he died (over here). I mean, I know they hate Americans, but I didn't realise that even England thinks Canada is "America" just like the Americans themselves do! I guess I really get that more than some Canadians would, because being First Nations makes me an "American" Red Indian to these people, which then translate to "American" (because as we know, the tribes do tend to be the same tribes if you're from near the border) and thus the shitty treatment that I've been getting. I mean, when I was in the States and would say I was Micmac, they immediately treated me like a foreigner, which technically I was. Here, it's "that's an American." I guess I can't win for losing, not outside of Nova Scotia. I came here for a Math teaching job and got called unqualified because I showed up Red Indian. Which kept happening in the United States, that's why I chose London over New York for Math teacher shortage cities. I interviewed over the phone from back there, and was told that I was qualified equivalent to the A-level, then got here and showed up the wrong colour just like in the United States.
So I'll be LUCKY to get even £15,000 if I find anything AT ALL.

Isn't that discrimination? thats basic racsism.don't they have equal opportunity employment? I don't get how they can do that.

When I first moved to London in 1997, I made about £15000/yr working in tourism. I had enough money to live in an OK houseshare (with 2 others) in north London (zone 2), go out drinking 4 nights a week (hey, I was still in student mode!), eat normally, and travel to Europe and around the UK during my holidays. I never felt rich and the Christmas season was a bit of a challenge, but I wasn't poor either. Obviously prices have increased a bit in the past 10 years, but £27000 is definitely enough to live on comfortably, especially if you are happy to share your home with another person!

Bexley is surprisingly expensive to live in but not as expensive as Greenwich. However you are further out from the action of London (zone 5 as opposed to Greenwich which is zone 2). My in-laws live in Sidcup and it always reminds me of the Toronto suburbs (the nicer ones!). Stay away from St Mary Cray as it's a bit scary. Bexleyheath is nice and very residential, it should be easy to find a house or flatshare if you'll be based in that area. There is loads of accommodation (and shopping) in Bromley, but also a bit of a reputation for youth gangs? Here's a link to the local paper Very Happy

And here are a couple of guesthouse listings

I also know one near the station in Sidcup (the Toronto hotel LOL Razz ), I'll send you the details if you're interested.

Thanks for all the details balinger.

I have actually lived in Bexley for almost 2 years now. And yes, you can live on £27,000. Very Happy

Wow! I would love to know how some of you guys are living! It must be complete luxury!

I make £14000 and I'm doing fine! I'm a little short for some of the luxuries in life, but I don't need new clothes every year or a spanking new car. I do have a car, insurance, a house and treat myself to jaunts around Europe when I can! It hasn't been too bad!

The thought of making £27000 makes me weak in the knees! I'm sure you'll do just fine!
