Can I renew my TN at JFK

Post Sat Nov 21, 2009 12:48 pm

My TN is expiring on Jan 11, 2010. Last time I got my TN at Kingston Lewiston Border, Buffalo.
I am going to India on Dec 20 and will be back on Jan 10, 2010. Can I get my TN renewed at JFK airport on landing?
Thanks for all help.

Yes you could but keep in mind when renewing at a U.S. airport internally, there is a greater risk of denial simply because they don't see as many petitions typically compared to the Canadian Pre-Flight Inspections. Therefore they are often not as familiar and competent with respect to knowledge of the laws/regulations surrounding NAFTA applications and their corresponding adjudications.

I would be careful going through Buffalo. 3 or 4 weeks in advance might fly with some officers but invariably with some it may be problematic. I would recommend 10 days to two weeks beforehand.

Thanks MC,
I can only go there before Dec 19 as I will be in India from Dec 20 to Jan 11.
I am in a fix, can't decide whether to go to Buffalo border 3 weeks in advance or get it at JFK airport on landing after my trip to India.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

Either one should work out for you, I cannot decide for you. The recent experiences at Buffalo have been fairly good compared to that port historically so that may not be a bad choice.

I only cautioned you about JFK since there could be an ignorance factor at work there. You have an equal probability of being approved. It is always nice when an ignorance factor goes in your favor but when it doesn't, that is not a pleasant surprise. And of course, the internal U.S. airports see way less TN petitions compared to the Canadian PFI's so obviously a greater chance of someone screwing up an adjudication. Good luck.

Thanks a lot.
I also think Buffalo border is a better option as they have full knowledge, and I always had very good experience with all the officers.

I just recently got my TN from Buffalo peace of cake, one thing i can tell you the officer was more interested in my degree then in the TN letter. He didn't even look at my letter and that too he was interested in the dates.

From other boards i have heard that the JFK experience is also good.

Just don't go to early otherwise they can ask you to come back at a later date.

I would go to JFK on my way back i think it will be easier for you.
Thanks

If a DHS Inspector didn't even look at your petitioning letter where the laws and regulations pursuant to 8 CFR NAFTA entries are usually elaborated on in detail according to the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, that should tell you something about that particular officer. He doesn't care and that is the most dangerous thing, the world of the incompetent.

Thanks All
I got my TN renewed on December 18, 2009, more than 3 weeks earlier. Officer at Border was knowledgeable and courtiers.

I believe if you are honest and qualified for TN, you will have no problem.
