Can I switch from a WHM to a work permit and marriage info?!

Post Tue Jan 29, 2008 11:32 am

HI everyone,

I don't know if this has been answered yet but I have been working now for the NHS for almost a couple of months now. My first year of my WHM finishes in September and I know that I am not allowed to work the second year of it. However, I would like to switch to a work permit after the first year and would like to start the process in the next couple of months or so. I am just wondering if this is possible to do? My position was advertised for a bit and i was chosen out of other UK citizens so I don't know if that matters when it comes to prove that I'm needed for the job.

Also, I am getting married in Canada next March to skip out on the 300 pounds it will cost to assess my immigration status to get a marriage license. What will happen when i return to the UK bc I now live here with my fiance.

Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

BH

This is taken from the http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk Faq on Whm Visas:

Can I apply to extend my stay once I am in the UK?
You cannot extend your stay as a working holidaymaker. However, you may be eligible to switch into work permit employment after 12 months in the UK if your occupation is on the list of ‘shortage occupations’. Working holidaymakers can also apply to stay in the UK as ‘Innovators’ and in the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP).

You might be able to find some more information if you check out the Borders and immigration site as well. :)
