Hi All,

Just spoke to the Maple Leaf pub and they said that they have been asked to keep everyone inside the pub this year, and anyone outside drinking will be asked by the police to move along. They said the police are being very strict about it so there's no chance of setting up shop outside the pub like years gone by.

ML also said they're giving out tickets to get in to the pub - they are free and u can pick them up before hand (sometime this week) and it's just to control numbers. If you don't have a ticket, you can't get in, but having a ticket doesn't guarantee you entry as only so many people can fit in the pub at one time. They will be showing the Engalnd match at 4pm if anyone's interested.

All sounds a bit too much like hard work to me. Factor in that they normally double the beer prices on Canada Day (six bottles of Moosehead was £22.50 last year), and I think we'd be better off somewhere else.

Anyone for organising a massive meet in Hyde Park? Roger Waters is playing Dark Side of the Moon (if you're into that kinds thang) so we could all set up shop outside and still listen to it - and get wasted!

This is disgraceful. I have attended this event several times, got tattoed and went swimming in the fountain in Trafalgar square. I have never heard anything except postive feedback from the cops who said there is never any trouble, and everyone is very well behaved. I can only imagine that there are either fears over terrorism, or worries about post-England match problems, and police resources being strained already.

It really chaps my ass that they can cancel this, when every year, several people get stabbed, mugged or beat up at Notting Hill Carnival and they let that carry on.

Ya it is pretty crap, especially when it's really the only thing on for Canada Day each year. Sure I think this thing is Trafalger Square is a cool idea but it's not even on on Canada Day which seems sort of silly.

Has anyone ever heard of any of the bands (besides Ron Sexsmith)? I've been out of Canada for 5 years so am really out of the Canadian music loop but I haven't heard of any of them. Not to write it off or anything but I would have much rather the organisers sponsered the meet outside the Maple Leaf and scrap the Trafalger Square thing. Why fix what isn't broken! It's one of my favourite days of the year and now it's scrapped for no good reason. Think I'll have a wander over on Friday. could be good.

I've got my tickets for Saturday though and plan to try to infiltrate the pub. do they really double the prices? I don't want to load up on Canadian booze, I'm happy with my Strongbow and a few Canadian tunes piping through the pub.

heya

Does anyone know any other expat pubs as an alternative? I am having a party that day and it was planned to be houseparty first and then after to the maple leaf . so still want to hang out in a more public celebration that day .

rats, I had everyone hyped about the streetparty at the maple leaf as it was so lovely last year. celebrating canada day a day before on trafalgar square at 2pm ( we don;t work apparently) seems just silly :(

I popped by the Maple Leaf Pub yesterday and was told they had no more tickets to dish out. They've got a capacity of 300 people and will not go over, as the police will be keeping a watchful eye on them.

I also asked a couple of 'people of authority' about drinking in Trafalgar Square on Friday. They said that as long as it is after 5 pm then it shouldn't be a problem.

Friday night it is, I guess.

No idea of any other canuck bars, I'm afraid. Such a shame that it won't be the same as last year as it was one of the coolest things I've experienced here. Nevermind, let's make Friday as good as we can.

I haven't heard of most of those artists either, so you're not the only one Kirsty!
