Canada -> France: Social Security, Taxation, Pensions...

Post Wed Mar 26, 2008 8:25 am

Greetings to all!

It would interest me to learn from the experience of others who have made the move from Canada to France regarding the different agreements and treaties between the two countries, notably, about the Franco-Canadian Social Security Agreement and the Tax Convention (pensions, taxation, inheritance, the purchase of property and real estate, etc.).

(I found all or most of the URLs with the original texts (tax convention, social security agreement, list of law firms from consular services, and other sites), but wasn't allowed to post the URLs with this message as this is my first post.)

More specifically:

- What are the formalities involved in taking part in the Social Security Agreement/Plan? Is it really worth it? Or is it better simply be on the French Social Security plan? How does this affect pensions and going back and forth from Canada to France? How about health insurance and health plans? Is it possible to be covered in both countries?

- Ditto for taxation. What are the different statuses you can have, their advantages, drawbacks, and, similarly, is it simply better to move everything to France in the long run or are there advantages in doing otherwise? Does anybody know anything about inheritance and taxation? Property and real estate transactions? Transferring money? How about the transition, i.e., the big/full "move"?

- I'd be interested in knowing if anybody has used any agencies or law firms in France to inquire further about this, both for one's own personal situation as well as in the context of business and freelance work (the tax convention and social security agreement are difficult to interpret, with all the legal jargon and all). Are any of the law firms any good? Expensive? Well worth it? Perhaps you could send me a private message or an email to answer these questions as the moderators might not approve of "advertising" :D. And, does anybody know of any other types of firms or agencies that deal with these sorts of issues (other than the ones listed on the consular services site)?

Lastly, perhaps there are other related questions and issues which I haven't mentioned, other ideas that you might have. I'd appreciate any input you have.

Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.
