Canada/US taxes

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Canada/US taxes

Post Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:05 pm

Basically I moved back to Canada in January of 2009 after living and working in the US since February 2002. With the economy and lay-offs and all that going on it worked out well to come home. I went there with the intent of staying, so I was considering the US as my tax home (although I did not file anything with the CRA). I was in the green card process when I moved back. I moved there right after grad school and never owned a home while I was there or anything so that should help keep things more straightforward I hope. Now that I am back (and have been looking into filing my 09 taxes) I am feeling that I have screwed myself by not filling the paperwork when I left and I am going to get hit with a huge tax bill on 7 years of US income (even the difference between the rates would be a lot).

Am I up the creek on this?? Any advice on how I should proceed with my 09 taxes (I lived in the US for 1 week in January 09 and got the last of my severence - got the W2 in the mail today actually)? Because I still have money in a 401k in the US - do I have to file a 1090NR every year untill that money is no longer in the 401k plan? Just so stressed about this right now, any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks
Brian
