Canada vs UK

Post Mon Jul 19, 2004 10:37 am

Does anyone else living in the UK feel like they're suffocating sometimes with EVERYTHING in close proximity to everything? Or is it just me...a Canadian country girl stuck in Swindon of all places!

Joffer,
growing up in the rural South of Ontario I know what you mean! I really dislike London and the other cities. The countryside is nicer but even there sometimes I feel suffocated. I miss the wide open fields of Canada. I miss red barns and dusty dirt roads.
As for can the UK compare to Canada. Well, I hold both citizenships and have lived here for half my life but in my opinion -nope! I am not ragging on the UK but Canada is Canada end of story. Soon, I will return to my beautiful homeland...
How long have you been in the UK for?

Like both of you, I felt a bit claustrophic during what I intended to be a leisurely visit to London. I also left the city more stressed than what I had been before arriving.

If I hadn't moved to Scotland, I doubt I would still be in the UK. There are bits of country up here that remind me of BC and that helps.

I grew up on the atlantic coast of Canada, and I hate London - there is no comparison city vs wide open spaces. Luckily I'm currently based in the New Forest, so I've got a little piece of paradise here! Still not like Canada, though

Yes, must agree with you all. This time of year I espically miss camping in Muskoka. There is nothing in the UK that is anywere like the clear lakes and forests of Canada.

I've been here almost 17 years.....you do get used to it...after a while. But trips to Wales and Scotland DEFINITELY help.

Look on the bright side......you don't need to shovel your driveway every winter morning!

But I miss shovelling the driveway! I miss snow - Fullstop (to sound British for a second). I was in Scotland all winter last year and still barely managed to see snow! I've been here 4 years, and it's not bad, but it'll never be home. That'll always be Canada.

No, it's not just you Joffer! I can totally relate! For me that suffocating feeling has been one of the more difficult things I've had to deal with living here. I miss being able to 'get away from everything' with relate ease.

i don't quite understand? i mean, assuming that people in the UK are there by choice, otherwise you'd be in Canada, right?....it's not that impossible to start a career at home. Or is it?

personally, i LOVE the cosmopolitan life--the crowds-the tube-the energy- the culture--as much of a comfort Canada is for everyone, i say enjoy this time to EXPLORE, you will have plenty of time for the familiar, such as chugging root beer, or standing in an empty wheat field or whatever it is you people are whistfully yearning for...;)

I agree with Joffer and Two Pints. I have had many a fond memory of shoveling snow on my Grand Parent's drive way-I even had my own little red plastic shove :)
I am not in the UK by choice, my parents moved the family about 11 years ago and I am leaving in a couple of months. I personally think that the UK can never compare to Canada but I also acknowlege that I am prejudice as Canada is my home.
