Canada vs. USA ... where to have our baby?!

Post Wed Oct 12, 2011 12:01 pm

Although i'm doing my own research and homework... i just want to get some opinions/viewpoints from some of you...

I am a Canadian citizen living in Vancouver, and recently i was in South Florida for 6 months and while down there i met a woman from Naples, Italy (who lives in Miami + has her green card)... Five months in to our relationship we find out she is pregnant... surprise!! (cue the shock, fear, confusion, anxiety, nervousness, excitement all wrapped up into one)... and then some

We now have MANY questions and concerns (of course)... and one of them is where to have the baby? Canada or USA?

We do not want to raise the child in Miami... chances are it will be Vancouver.
But, i'm feeling and thinking it would be beneficial if the child is born in the US, allowing for dual citizenship... (myself, i am NOT interested in US citizenship... just thinking about the baby)... and then perhaps we move the child/mother up to Vancouver (in which case i think i'd have to sponsor my girlfriend/common law...)

Yes/no?
Agree/disagree?
Thoughts/concerns?

Thanks!

If the child is born in US, it will be US and Cdn citizen automatically (I assume you are the father), and possibly Italian. You would only need to sponsor the mother to canada. None of this gets you any benefit for US immigration, even if you married (just in case this was a goal -- you still have to leave US).

If it is born in canada, then it will not be US citizen.

Your other concern will be medical cost.

If born in US, the mother and child's medical expenses would need to be covered by her work, or it will cost $$.
If she has the baby in canada before immigrating, her costs would not be covered by BC medical, but the babies (after birth) would. If she has it after imigrating (probably impossible in this case given the time frame) all costs would be covered by BC medical.

She may have trouble coming into canada as a visitor, because of the likelihood she will stay, but you can research this yourself.

So, I guess the important things are her work insurance status now and during delivery, and your ability to sponsor her to canada quickly.

Hi there!

I have a question for everyone and would love some help/advice... we are Canadians living in NYC for a year and I am 4wks pregnant... I am trying to figure out if its smarter/better to have a child in NYC or back home in Canada - we have private insurance (though I don't think it covers 100%) but I wanted to know what the 'rules' are for having a baby in the US if both parents are Canadian... are we even allowed? Would the baby be a dual citizen automatically? Is there extra fees or paperwork involved? How soon would I have to decide? Thank you sooo much for your help! :)

Hello everyone! Just thought of something - are there taxation implications for the child if we as Canadians have a child in the US? Would they be a US and Canadian citizen (because eventually we will be going back home to Canada) and if so, would they be responsible to pay tax (or file) in the US every year? Thanks for your help!

We already answered that your child born in US would be US citizen.
They would be taxable in US forever, regardless of where they live. Few US citizens in canada pay extra tax to US after all the credits for Cdn tax paid, so that is not a worry.

Plus the chiold will egt you $1000/yr if YOU as his parents file every year.
