Hi Kris, I wouldn't be able to help you with the immigration rules for france as I haven't done any research on the subject sorry.
I do believe you are right that you aren't eligible for the ancestry visa, unless either your parents or your grandparents had citizenship within the united kingdom.
There are a few routes available to you, but without knowing the specifics of your situation, I don't know what would be best for you.
If you plan on only living in the UK for 1-2 years you can always apply as a working holiday maker provided you are under 30 years of age. That would allow you to work for 12 months and reside in the uk for 2 years.
If you are looking at permanent residence you are probably looking at a work permit, which involves a points based system which may or may not work in your favor. You can find out more information about various visas here:
http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagenam...cid=1018696631238
If you haven't already explored that site I would recommend giving it a good once over.
You may, as an option look for jobs in the UK and see if you can get a company to sponsor your application. This can be difficult to do unless you have specialized or in demand skills. Most companies don't want to go through the effort.
There is of course the spouse / marriage visa route, however I wouldn't recommend going that route unless you are in a commited relationship with the individual in question.
I hope that helps.
Good Luck.
