Hi, I'm Australian & my boyfriend is Canadian. We met & started living together whilst I was in Toronto on a Work Holiday Program visa.
We had been living together for 16 months when my visa expired (only a couple of days ago), and I have had to return to Australia without him due to his work commitments.
We were both so busy working together in the Cruise Boat industry, and were living with his elderly mother (lease, hydro, phone all in her name) that we had no time to apply for Common-Law status.
Before we knew it, my time was up.
From the moment we met, we knew we had met our life long partners. We know we are going to get married, and we want to start saving to buy our own place...here is our problem:
The plan was for me to return to Australia to apply for a second Work Holiday Program Visa & spend Xmas with my family. If the visa was not approved for any reason, then I was going to enter on a visitor visa shortly after Xmas & we would get married.
I got the shock of my life when the application asked if I was in a common-law relationship, and also to list any common-law relationships in the last 5 yrs, and provide the dates!!!
Lying is not an option...will the truth deny me entry all together???
Any by the way, why the hell is it so hard for Commonwealth Citizen's to be together?
Do they not understand that we will be paying tax, buying a house, voting, etc....in other words putting $$$ into the economy?
Does anyone have any helpful information to help us succeed in living like normal people?
Any advice or story sharing would be helpful, have a great day, Ruthie
