Canadian buying a US car to use in both countries

Post Sun Aug 02, 2009 11:25 am

I am a Canadian citizen with 2 homes which I own . One in Canada and one in Florida. I spend 6 months in each home each year. I wish to purchase a new car, and the price is lower in the US. Can I purchase it in the US and ship it to Canada for 6 months, then back to Florida again and repeat this procedure every year? In this way I pay a lower price and the US tax is only 6% v/s the Can tax of 13% to cover both PST and GST ?

You can, but you can't register it in Florida and leave it as a Florida-registered vehicle (unless you never bring it back) because your principal residence is in Canada. So when you bring it in to Canada the first time you will have to comply with Canadian import rules as described at www.riv.ca and pay any tax due on it. If it's a car made in North America, there's no duty but you will get hit with GST/PST/HST. Essentially you import it, register it and then take it back down to Florida.

I will be starting a new job in a few weeks in Philadelphia (I currently live in Toronto). I will be on a TN VISA initially, with my company sponsoring me with an H1B later.

My question is concerning a car. I would like to buy a used car. I understand that that is not a problem in the USA, but how can I make a trip back to Canada with it? Is there any way to drive back seeing as how I will not have an H1B (initially) or a PA driver's license or a US passport. I would prefer to keep a PA license plate, but do I really need to "import" the vehicle back to Canada just to visit?

Also, is it worthwhile to apply for a PA driver's license? Do I need to give up my Ontario driver's license?

Thanks!

If you live in PA, even temporarily (TN is not really temporary) you need a PA DL.

Only Ontarians thing that their DL is special. Get over it. Get a PA DL.

As to visting Canada, once you live ib US, have US car plated in PA and a DL, you are just like any other person from PA visiting Canada. You will haveno problems crossing border with your car, just like them.

OK, I have a similar predicament... I’m a US and Canadian dual citizen living in Canada. I work freelance in the film business, and when I’m working in LA I usually rent a car and stay in a hotel. However, I would like to be able to use my own car and rent an apartment there. I believe this technically would make me a resident and require me to register the vehicle in LA and get a CA drivers license… Since I still live in Canada and drive my car here, how do I solve that? I may be in LA for weeks at a time, months even, but my home is still in Canada. Am I in a strange limbo between worlds, or is there a legal way to do this? (Two homes, two countries, one vehicle) ???
