Canadian Citizen with temp Green Card wants to visit home..

Postby CanadaUS » Thu Sep 11, 2008 5:17 pm

I'm planning a trip with my small family to visit my brother during the Christmas holidays. I would like to know if I need a passport to fly over to Canada. My wife is an American Citizen and my first newborn baby (just last week 8/29 ) :D has his birth certificate. I, on the other hand have a temporary green card, an expired Canadian passport and all the American / Canadian identification .driver's license / health card / credit cards and so forth.

Do I use my green card? Canadian Citizenship card? I only want to visit home (Canada).but will be coming back to my career and life here in the U.S.A.

Any tips / opinions / comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

You cannot get on an airplane without a passport. I suggest you apply for a new one ASAP.

Thanks for the reply. I have a few other questions still.
1. Do I use my Canadian ID to cross?
2. Will this hurt my status if I use my Canadian ID?
3. Can they stop me from coming back to the U.S if I use my Canadian Passport in lieu of my green card?

Thanks again.

In dealing with the airline, you would probably just show the Canadian passport. In dealing with US officials you would make sure they saw both the passport and the GC.

In order for you to get on an airplane, you will need a current and valid passport. They will not let you on the flight if your passport is expired. I believe your baby will also require a passport to board the plane. Check with the airlime before you book your tickets.

In order to be admitted to Canada, you only need to show you are a Canadian citizen (best form of proof of that is a current and valid passport).

In order to be re-admitted to the US, you will need to show your green card, and maybe your passport. Green Card is an absolute must when re-entering the US.

Have a read of www.getyouhome.gov - it lists the type of ID you can use and on what kinds of transport.
