Canadian Citizenship

Post Sun Aug 30, 2009 7:27 am

Ok everyone...I'm looking to possibly move over to Ireland and the UK (lived in Ireland for a year). My great grandmother was born in Kent County, England and her daughter (my grandma) was born in Kent County, Ontario, Canada. I know the UK ancestral visa only goes back to your grandparents but I was wondering if I could possibly become a Canadian citizen (through my grandma?) and then apply for a work-visa in the UK through that citizenship. We still have cousins in both the UK and in Canada...I'm just trying to think through all of my options. Any ideas? Suggestions!

Thanks!

Cdn citizenship does not confer any special rights to a work-visa in UK, so I wouldn't waste fruitless effort to get Cdn citizenship soley for that purpose.

But, no, the situation you describe does not induauce that you would be a Cdn citizen in any event.

Your mother or father (whichever descended from your Cdn grandma) probably was canadian citizen. But their citizenship cannot now be passed to you. there was a window for this which ended a few years ago.

AFAIK, American citizens are not eligibe for ancestry visas to the UK anyhow. Only commonwealth citizens (Canada, Oz, New Zeland etc...)

He could get a working holiday visa though if he was a citizen of a Commonwealth country. Awful lot of effort just for that though.

considering he's not eligible for Canadian citizenship either, even the WHV is not available.
