Canadian Company Sponsorship as US Liason

Post Thu Feb 19, 2009 8:35 pm

I was wondering if anyone knows how a Canadian company can sponsor an employee as a liaison in the US. I heard it from someone but is this even possible or can it be done in any capacity that is similar If someone can lead me in the right direction or let me know that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The sponsorship has to come from a US-based company, e.g. if your company has a US office. Normally intra-company transfer is L-1.

L-1B is for the transfer of people with "specialized knowledge", and by that they mean specialized knowledge of how that company works, not that you're a genius.

L-1A is for managers, must be able to show you're managing a significant number of people.

A can be renewed up to seven years, B up to five years and you must have worked for the sponsoring company for at least a year.

There's also "L-1 intermittent" which can be renewed indefinitely but you have to either meet the criteria for A or B and cannot spend more than 183 days a year in the US.
