The sponsorship has to come from a US-based company, e.g. if your company has a US office. Normally intra-company transfer is L-1.
L-1B is for the transfer of people with "specialized knowledge", and by that they mean specialized knowledge of how that company works, not that you're a genius.
L-1A is for managers, must be able to show you're managing a significant number of people.
A can be renewed up to seven years, B up to five years and you must have worked for the sponsoring company for at least a year.
There's also "L-1 intermittent" which can be renewed indefinitely but you have to either meet the criteria for A or B and cannot spend more than 183 days a year in the US.
