Canadian Couple repatriating with American-born daughter

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Canadian Couple repatriating with American-born daughter

Post Thu Apr 02, 2009 7:17 am

Hi there fellow Canucks and those who love them!

We are moving back to Canada with our daughter who was born during our stay here in New York city.

I see that there is a process in acquiring her Canadian citizenship that takes a few months and even a few months longer on average if I go through Canadian Embassy, rather than waiting to do it when we return.

We are moving back end of July and wonder how they will receive her at the border if she does not yet have her Canadian citizenship card.

Do we have a window to get that done upon her return?

How much on average will doctor's visits be before OHIP kicks back in?
Does she need to wait 3 months AFTER aquiring her card or does it start from the day she returns as well?

Do we need to get NEW ohip cards or do our old ones work after 3 months waiting period?

So many questions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Canada isn't quite as anal about this situation as the Americans, she can enter as a visitor and you can apply for the citizenship certificate then I'm pretty sure, but phone the CBSA and check. All you need is the birth certificate to enter.

Can't help on OHIP I'm afraid.

Check www.riv.ca on bringing vehicles in, there is no duty on personal effects including vehicles, however you need title to the vehicle in order to be able to register it in Canada (i.e. not on finance).

Also you'll need to complete CBSA forms B4 and B4A to declare your personal effects. They don't have to accompany you but make sure you list every single thing in detail on those forms even if you may not bring it in.

My understanding is that you can apply for your daughter's OHIP at the same time that you are applying for yours. You should have already applied for the proof of your daughter's Canadian citizenship at this point. You can explain to them that you're in the process of applying for her citizenship documentation. She will be subject to the 3-month wait as will you.

I would recommend that you contact OHIP directly to get a confirmation of this information. Their number is 416-314-7444.

As for doctor's fees, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care maintains a schedule of fees: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/pro ... ob_mn.html
