Canadian driving US vehicle in Canada?

Postby bumbobee on Tue Dec 02, 2008 7:25 am

Hello all, first off let me say that I have been having a really tough time with motorcycle insurance quotes, and my dream of having a motorcycle this summer is quickly being shattered by astronimically high Ontario insurance rates which for me would start off at $ 4000 dollars per year for the next 6 years.

I have been doing some research and boiled down to this idea. Buy a motorcycle in the states, register it/insure it there, and drive it in Canada occassionaly, although most of my riding will be done in the states anyways. I got quoted for a full coverage 500,000 $ insurance policy for 500 bucks a year, sure puts that 3500 in my pocket to enjoy myself.

My question is, can I cross the borders without a problem? Is there anything special to consider. I read somewhere here on this board that you cannot do this and they will stop you from entering Canada?

Any insight is appriciated, thanks

As a resident of Ontario you'd have to get insurance in Ontario. Sometimes you can find an agent in the US who you can get insurance through if you live in the US but have an Ontario DL (because you're in a non-immigrant category), but you're not in that situation. Without a US address I can't see how it's possible.

In any event, CBSA would require you to formally import any vehicle acquired in the US if you are a resident of Ontario, which is why they ask which country you live in when you cross the border. So you'd basically have to register it in Ontario.

Even if you used a US PO box, I suspect if you ever claimed on the insurance you'd find yourself in trouble for misrepresenting yourself to the insurance company.

I think you should go on foot or take the taxi for traveling rather than using motorbikes because using this vehicles is very dangerous
