Canadian/Dutch dual citizenship

Canadian/Dutch dual citizenship

Postby mvs » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:19 am

I immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in 1959, at the age of 19, and 5 years later I became a Canadian citizen (and gave up my Dutch citizenship). Does anyone know if it is now possible for me to become a dual Dutch/Canadian citizen?

Thanks!

You already are from the sounds of it, you have a Dutch birth certificate presumably. Just apply for a passport if you want.

Back in 1964 Canada formally required you to renounce citizenship of wherever you came from, but that rule was scrapped in 1979 and it was basically a declaration in Canada. So provided you never renounced it directly to Dutch authorities, it's simply a case of applying for a passport.

Dutch law is pretty strict. Except for some exceptions you cannot have dual Dutch/anything.
If you freely choose to become Canadian you automatically lost your Dutch citizenship. See the site of Dutch Department of immigration ind.nl

This place has proven very knowledgable.

I am Canadian. Born in 1980. My father is also Canadian. Born Dutch in 1952. He emigrated from Holland to Canada at 8 years old in 1960. He became Canadian in 1972.

I have confirmed that as long as my father was still considered a Dutch citizen when I was born then I would have inherited the nationality from him.. and have basically until 2013 to get my Dutch passport or I lose out on that opportunity forever..

Does anyone know if my father would have actually lost his Dutch citizenship when becoming Canadian if at that time he never formally renounced it? Or if his age (19-20) would have any impact?

Has anyone gone through this same process before and has any insight into the whole ordeal? It's kind of a maze of questions and answers and still even more questions.. :S

Unfortunatly it is not that easy. The deadline to do this was over 5 years ago unless you fall in the grey area. Best thing to do is contact the embassey. I was obtain mine merely because my dad was born a dutch citizen in Canada but died in 1991 so therefore he didn't have an opportunity to reclaim dual citizenship. This option ended in 2005. I was able to fight last year and get it because of a small clause that allows orphaned children to get there citizenship if there parent didn't have the opportunity. Again best thing to do is call the Dutch Embassey.

To Answer the question above, if you Father gave up his citizenship than he can not get it back. If you were born while your dad was a citizenship then you maybe able to get your citizenship, if you were born after he gave it up then you can not get youor citizenship. The dutch are very sticky and unfortunatly you don't just inherit it. You must provide a lot of paperwork.
