Canadian Getting back into Canada when Passport is expired?

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Canadian Getting back into Canada when Passport is expired?

Post Sun Jan 23, 2011 7:25 pm

It's a mouthful, I know.

My father is currently living in the US on E2 visa's. Dad's visa is expiring as in May, and things aren't working out, so he's looking to come back to Canada and start-over. His passport expired about 6 months ago. Pretty sure he's overstayed his I-94 too....

Will he have any trouble getting back into Canada without re-newing his Visa? Is flying an option? Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

If he flies, he needs a passport. period.
If he travels by car, he doesn't need a passport to get into canada. He creatainly doesn't need a US visa to return to Canada.

He can extend the E-2 from within US, and that would not require current passport.

He does know that it only takes about a month to renew a passport? No time like the present.

If his E-2 visa is expiring in may, why do you say he is in overstay position? Usually the I-94 and visa coincide.

It's not the BEST idea to be out of your country with an expired passport. He can renew it from within the US. Best get on that. Then there are no worries about getting back, regardless of how he travels.
