Canadian gf and American bf what do we do?

Post Mon May 09, 2011 3:18 pm

So how does all this work?

Im American and my gf is Canadian. We are planning on her moving to the states with me im the future. We have plans on getting married but not just yet. When we do, how do we do it?

She does not want to lose her Canadian status, and I have to good of a job to move up to Canada. Is there a such thing as a duel citizenship?

If not how are you guys dealing with this and how can we make it easier on us?

Anything on this subject will help.

When you say she "doesn't want to lose her Canadian status" what does that mean? Is she a Canadian citizen or is she living in Canada under some other legal status? If she is a Canadian citizen she won't be at risk of losing that. If she has some other status more info is needed.

For marriage based green cards the best source of info is:

If she wants to live in the USA in some other status (ie without getting married) she will need to qualify for some working status. Most commonly Canadians get TN status, but this (usually) requires a degree and is only available to work in certain fields.

Of course, if you are yourself sufficiently well qualified to have a good job that you wouldn't think of leaving, you are probably also sufficiently well qualified to emigrate to Canada and get a good job in Canada. The Canadian immigration process is more straightforward than its US equivalent, and the downturn in the world economy has been kinder to Canada than to the USA. Just saying. :)
