Canadian going to get US Citizenship

Post Sat Feb 07, 2009 3:39 am

Hi, I need a little help. I have heard of many Canadians carrying dual citizenship for the US. The reason I am finding this to be a problem is this. I married a US citizenship and am planning on applying for my citizenship via naturalization and when I went to the USCIS website, it says that I in order to get my US citizenship, I have to renounce all foreign allegiances. I just checked it before I came on here so it is recent. Does this mean I need to give up my canadian citizenship? Its under the guide to naturalization on their website. So how are there so many dual citizens? Is it only when americans immigrate to canada that they allow you to keep your american citizenship? But when its the other way around, they make you give it up? Does anyone know?

I answered your question in the other thread that you posted it in.

PLEASE only post questions or topics in one spot, it will eventually be seen and answered.

Technically the US does not recognize "dual" citizenships. You must say in the oath that you renounce any other country you may be a national of, However, Canada does not recognized that oath, so you can keep your Canadian citizenship. When you travel, if you go back to Canada, you should enter with your Canadian passport, when you come back to the US, you should enter with your US passport.

In order to officially renounce Canadian citizenship, one must go to Ottawa (or a Canadian consul office in whichever country they're living) and fill out a bunch of paperwork and pay fees and a bunch of other stuff.

There are pros and cons to getting US citizenship, and you should probably figure them all out before you decide to submitt the N-400 application. The oath is only part of it.

The State Dept. gave up caring about this back in the late 70s I think. Yes you've renounced allegiance but they don't follow up on it unless you're North Korean or something like that.

I am waiting for issuance of Immigration visa from US Consulate in Montreal. I submitted all my documents that were receive in Consulate in Dec. 2008. I have not received my passports back. What could be the cause of delay? My I-140 is sponsored by my employer.

We have no way of knowing. Contact the Consulate directly.

Hi Reba,
Thanks for your response. Consulate people will not respond to the question "on how long will it take or if they need anything else?" Is there anything else I can do?

Renouncing your Cdn citizenship and just being a US citizen:

the pros:
you can vote for the lesser of the two evil  political parties (wish there were more political parties here; independents have very little power).

the cons:
cannot vote in Canada.
you can't go to some countries (Cuba).
if captured in a hostile country like Iran, Cdns will be let go while US citizens will be held or even slaughtered.

Did you hear about the Canadian journalist locked up without trial in Iran?

There's no logical reason to give up Canadian citizenship, there are no advantages to doing it whatsoever.
