Canadian hoping to live in US with American boyfriend

Postby catherine84 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 10:58 pm

I've been researching online on the various types of Visas but I'm still confused about which would be the best for me. Here is my situation:

I'm a Canadian citizen and I want to move in with my boyfriend who is a US citizen. I'm taking an 8 month program at a college in Canada starting next September, so I am hoping to live with my boyfriend in the US until then. Do I need a Visa if I'm just going to be living with my boyfriend (and not working)? I'm worried that I will have problems at the border if I don't have a Visa.

Ideally, I would like to have a job in the US while I live there, but my boyfriend lives in a small town and I don't have much faith that I will be able to find a job in my field where he lives. I have a 4 year degree in nutrition, and I've seen that nutritionist is on the list for the TN visa. If I am able to find a nutritionist job, would a TN Visa be the quickest and best route to take?

My boyfriend and I have also talked about getting engaged soon. If I applied for a K-1 fiance Visa, does this mean I can find any job (not necessarily degree-related)? Would I only be able to work at the job for 3 months until we get married? What if we were to get married right away? What Visa would I be eligible for then, and would it entitle me to work at any job for longer than 3 months?

Also, does anyone know the processing times for the various Visas? Since I'm going to be back in Canada in September there wouldn't be much use in me applying for a Visa that's going to take many months to process.

Thanks a lot for your help :P
