Canadian in a Relationship with an American

Post Wed Jun 18, 2008 12:44 pm

Hi,

I'm currently in an relationship with an American. In order to be together, he is planning a move to Canada. Can someone please tell me the obstacles and pitfalls involved with this. Also, what are the steps we need to go through to make this happen.

Thanks,
C.P

I think you don't need to worry because he is an American. I mean, if the guy loves you and you love him too, you two will find a way to make things work. And, like any relationship there will always be the ups and downs. The most important thing about it is you will survive each challenge.

sounds like you are having my reverse problem, my american boyfriend wants me to move to the states, and so far all the Visas i have looked at have not worked in my favour.
when I was looking at something for him it looked as though it might have been easier for him to get here.
All I can suggest is start looking at what sort of Visa he might need and go from there.

For information on immigration to Canada, check out the forums at http://roadtocanada.com/ If you get married you can sponsor him.

And for the forms and everything they're at the Canadian Immigration website http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp

For information on getting to the US check out http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php? if you plan to get married you can do the K1 fiancee visa, or if you get married first, you can do the spousal immigrant visa CR1. The USCIS website has all the forms http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis

Its really not very difficult, unless either one of you has a criminal record.

thanks for the website! Most people aren't making me feel confident that I'll be able to go, but I'll take a look at the visas and cross my fingers.

It's not that hard to move to be with them, it's getting employment authorization which is the trick. Marriage does make it easier, but Canada does recognize common-law marriage so it's easier for an American to move to Canada than vice versa. Easier to get a work permit to work in Canada also, although I wouldn't go as far as saying it's "easy", just easier.

yeah, but to even start a common-law sponsorship and application, the couple has to have already lived together for one year. Difficult to do, if they're in different countries.

Im currently living in the US under TN Status, check it out. If your boyfriend fits into one of the categories; use it! It's the easiest way to get him through. Otherwise you have to hope and pray that the officer isnt in a bad mood.
