Canadian Journalist Freelancing in US & Abroad

Post Wed Jul 27, 2011 4:32 pm

Hello there,

I can't seem to find any information regarding freelancing for US publications. Do I need a special visa to and receive compensation for articles that I have submitted to US magazines/newspapers/online journals? I am a Canadian resident/citizen but travel between Canada, the US and Europe quite often. Also, I was on a TN Visa as a technical writer for 2 years, doing technical writing for one particular employer, but am no longer on a TN Visa and am currently back in Canada (hoping to make my way back to the US for a few months). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For US, If you freelance for a particular firm, they should be getting a 'I' visa for you, just as if you were employed.

You would need one for every firm that contracts you.

I don't think TN would work for journalist.

But doesn't the I visa only cover non-US media? I.e. I would be working for a Canadian media company, but reporting from the States?

No. Read the rules on I. US-based org can petition for a foreign freelancer using 'I'.
