Canadian living in United States wanting to move back...

Hello!

I am a Canadian citizen who married an American. I have lived in the US for 6 years now. I have gone through immigration to move here and now have my green card. I have not given up my Canadian citizenship. We now have 3 yo twin boys who I guess would be considered half American & half Canadian.

Now that we have children we want to move closer to my family. We live in Columbus, OH and my family all lives in British Columbia Canada and it is not an ideal situation being so far away from everyone.

So I am trying to figure out how we could move back to Canada. My husband has a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and has been working at the same job for 7 years. I am a stay at home mom but plan on going back to work when my children start school.

I have no clue how to start collecting information on how to get us all back there. I know if it were just me going it wouldn't be too hard since Canada would still recognize me as a Canadian citizen. but what about my husband and children???

Is there anyone out there who has been in a similar situation?? Any have any insight as to what websites we should start doing research on?? There are so many sites out there that I don't know where to start!!

Thank you in advance!!

B :)

see the forums and info at http://roadtocanada.com

Your husband will have to go thru Canadian immigration obviously, similar to what you did to get to the US. However, it won't take as long. Usually only about 6 months to process.

Your children are considered Canadian citizens because you're a citizen, so you don't need to sponsor them with your husband, but they will need to get Canadian citizenship cards, and passports before you go.

There may be info at the Passport Canada website http://www.ppt.gc.ca/index.aspx?lang=eng

If not, check the Canadian consulate website http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/buffalo/

I'd suggest you apply for US citizenship before you move back, that way if you ever want to move back to the US you don't re-create the problem yet again. Worth getting US passports for your kids too if they don't already have them.

For info on bringing cars back (you must own them, can't be leased or financed) have a look at www.riv.ca also you need CBSA forms B4 and B4A for your personal effects. They're all duty-free except for the cars, only the first $10,000 of the car's value is duty-free (although if it was made in North America you only have to worry about GST and PST).
