Canadian living in USA needs to move back to Canada

Post Tue Jan 10, 2012 1:45 pm

I moved to the USA in 1985. Now I am 56 yrs old and want to move back to Canada. I am planning on renting a U Haul and drive my 2006 Nissan with my personal belongings only, such as clothing, pictures and books. Does anyone know what is required of me to do this move. I live in California and will be moving to Ottawa, Ontario, where I originally came from..Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am not sure what is needed of me to do this..Thank you Debra

Hi, I'm moving back to Ontario in June or July this year, and am totally confused about taxes and duty on my 2004 buick . It's my understanding that you need a Letter of Compliance from the original manufacturer, also a letter from the manufacturer saying when the car was made, blah, blah..blah, and it has to be on letterhead. Then there are fees for crossing the border, and wait until you see what you have to get to do this...I'm surprised they don't ask for your first male born child. Totally confusing, one person says no taxes and duty , considered settler's effects. Someone else told me I have to pay taxes and duty....So I'm just going to call Transport Canada. Oh, yeah..one more thing...some kind of letter saying the car has an immobilization device installed on it, and if it isn't a certain type, they won't admit the vehicle. It's ridiculous!

I am moving myself and my 2007 Toyota back to Canada in a few weeks. The customs paperwork seems the least of my worries at the moment. I know that there is some paperwork and 72 hours prior notification on the US side, then I plan to use the B4 form on the Canadian side and get a $10,000 exemption on taxes. There is also the RIV form/fee I think. Then I need to install daytime running light within a few months of moving to Canada. My difficulty right now is finding a reputable affordable transporter to move from California to Quebec. I got a reasonable quote (less than $2000) from one firm but saw some very scary reviews online for that firm. Recommendations?

That really does sound very reasonable. Less than $2000? Almost too reasonable. Of course, get it in writing...so they don't latch on hidden fees. I've moved locally and it's usually $100 per hour. (Las Vegas). I'm just bringing some clothes, two dogs, and some art supplies. Have to fly my two cats...a road trip is out of the question for them. (Oh, yeah...a chubby hubby too). Maybe.
