Canadian Marrying A US Citizen

Post Tue Sep 01, 2009 5:20 pm

First off, I'd like to appologize if I am repeating a question. I've been sort of hob nobbing around online trying to find answers to my dilemma and it just feels like I'm clicking link after link with no real answers.

I live in Ontario and my boyfriend lives in Michigan. The plan is for me to move to the US with him and get married. So far as I can tell that requires a K-1 Visa. If all goes as planned, do I lose my Canadian Citizenship?

My boyfriend has also told me that he was told that I would be able to get a job there with no hassles afterwards. That sounds a little too simple to me. I only say this because after looking into this, nothing about moving to the US seems simple :(

Are there others out there who are in the same situation or have been? I hope so. I'm in dire need of some clear answers here.

Thank you so much,
Nathalie

You don't lose your Cdn citizenship under any circumastances. Note that you won't become a US citizen for at least 3 years; even then you will still be Cdn citizen.

as always, visajourney.com is your best source for marriage based immigrtaion experiences.

Yes I took a look but it didn't really say anything about citizenship after marriage. Thank-you for your prompt reply

As a Canadian who moved to the US in April of 2007, be aware of the TAX IMPLICATIONS before you makethe move. I had to learn this lesson the hard way after coming back in December of last year where i had to pay back GST, and child tax credits because i left too soon. You need to be here in Canada for a certain number of days before you can leave. That is your best option so that Revenue Canada does not come after you. You need to check into that as well.

Your GST and CCTB stops the day you leave canada, regardless of when that is. You had to pay it back simply because you forgot to tell RevCan.

The emigrants guide from CRA explains all the tax and benefitr responsibilities for someone leaving canada.

Departure tax is the killer if you have something subject to it, not repaying back tax credits because there's usually an equivalent in the US e.g. child tax credit (assuming you're an LPR).

Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen residing in Ontario, whereas my boyfriend is an American citizen residing in Michigan.

We will be getting married. I am wondering how to make this process as easiest as possible. In other words, is it easier to get married in Ontario or the U.S.? We have not decided where we will be residing permanently afterwards, but it is likely we will be living in the U.S. for a couple of years and then we will move to Canada. Therefore, we both are likey going to apply for dual citizenship in the future.

Also, if there any links that address my concerns would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Kathy

I am a Canadian Female and have a fiance in the US.We met in Nov.2009 and have been visiting for and back. We want to get married and I would live with hem in the US. Is it less complicated if I go to the US and we get married there and he would apply for a spousel green card? Or should we wait and my Fiance will apply for a Fiance Visa. What takes longer?
Maiden in waiting.
