Canadian marrying UK citizen in Canada

Post Wed Feb 02, 2005 9:02 pm

I'm looking for some info & would appreciate any input. I'm a Canadian and my UK girl friend & I are going to marry in Canada. Because of her family situation, we've decided that it's better for me to relocate to the UK. I'd like to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation & what's involved.
Thanks in advance.

This website should answer your questions regarding paperwork. I have no idea about processing time or the hassle factor involved.

I married in the UK and applied for a spousal visa here.

Hi,

I was in the same situation over 4 year ago so. I married my husband in July 2000 in Montreal. We did not apply right away because he had to go back in England to find a job in order to show that he could support me financially. He was previously working for his father but it was not "official" and we could not prove this so he went back to find a job where he could have wage slips to show. If I remember it right he had to show the last 6 weeks of wage slips. So we waited that time before applying.
I think I must have applied at the end of Septembre 2000 and it took about 6-7 weeks to have the answer back.
Here the documents that I remember I had to send with the application:
- His wage slips and my wage slips
- Bank account statements (for both of us)
And because he was living with his parents (they own the house) they have to show the mortgage statement showing the house belong to them.
They had to write a letter saying we could stay with them as long as required.

One time I phoned the home office to know how much money they expected us to have in our bank accounts but they said it depends of each case. So to give you an idea : I had about $6000 CAN and my husband did not have much at the time so a friend loan him £5000 (or £10000 ...not sure anynmore) to put in his bank account.

I also had a phone interview.
If you have more questions I will do my best to answer them !!

Good luck !

Joanne

I also got married in 2000 to my UK husband. After we were married, we drove to Ottawa and applied in person for the spose visa. We had all our paperwork with us. Documents that my husband owned his house, letter from his empolyers, bank records for both of us. Although my husband had a steady job and good income, he didn't have much savings. However, since I had savings to support myself we got the visa. We had the interview there and then and got the visa right away. However, we were told that it would normally take about 2 weeks to get the visa when appling in person. Guess we were lucky.
