Canadian Passport is expiring

I know there is a Canadian Embassy in London, but I just needed some information on what to do to apply for a new passport. Mine expires in 10 months. Do i have to go directly to London to the embassy? Do I have to get my own picture taken for a new one, or do they do it? Do I get my old passport back, since my YMS Visa is in it???

You need to SEND your completed passport application (including your own photos and old passport) to the High Commision, noting that you need it back on the application.

As to your YMS visa, you will likely want to have it transfered to your new passport by UK Border Agency, but there is no need to do this, you can carry both passports:

I have a question regarding your passport expiring. I'm planning on applying for the YMV soon but my current passport expires in June... do you think this will be an issue? I could renew my passport first but I'm just wondering. Thanks for any advice!

You would be better off renewing passport first

I would say renew, it's not worth the hassle of having it expire when away, and if you end up getting delayed in Canada your passport may expire before you enter the uk and have your visa validated.

Along the lines of this post...How early can one apply for a new passport? Mine expires March 2012; can I apply now, or do I have to wait nearer the time? Thanks for any info!!

Form the current passport application form:

If your current passport expires more than 12 months from the date the application is submitted, provide a written explanation as to why you are applying at this time. Should Passport Canada not be satisfied that you have a valid reason for applying early, your application for a new passport may be refused.

So, 12 months early with no question. Earlier than that with vaild explanation.
