canadian remote employee of US company traveling to clients

Post Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:00 pm

Hi,

I am working for a US company from my home office. Last week I was going to visit a client in the US but the Immigration officer deny me entry. I was told I needed a work visa, tn should do it.

1/ during the discussion with the officer, he seems to make a big deal about the currency I was being paid. For myself and my employer we have absolutely no preference, what is the difference legally here?

2/ I looked and prepared tn paperwork but I can only see the case where job is starting following the entry. I am already working for the company and just enter the US to visit clients, usually few days, less than a week.
My contract is temporary with my employer. Am I expected to run into issues at the border (again)?

thank you

1. Money should not matter. It is more complicated than that.

2. The TN allows you to conduct work in the USA, it does not matter that you already work for the company from Canada. You need authorization to work on our soil.

What is it that you do that would require work authorization? Selling a US product? Making decisions that effect US citizens?
