Canadian Resident in USA

Post Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:42 am

Before posting this thread and even finding this forum, I had to search everywhere and I hope I can find my answer here.

I am Canadian resident and have been offered a JOB in the USA.
However, I still need a year and half to live in Canada to become a citizen (get the Canadian Passport).

So my question is, is there a way for me to work in the USA yet keep the days counting as if I am living in Canada?

An unofficial source told me that if I am to be recruited by the Company's office based in Canada and sent abroad, this would be possible as my contract will be based in Canada and will still have to pay rent and Income taxes.

That case is sure but with limited companies (to name one, people working abroad for SNC-Lavalin and pay their Canadian taxes and rent, their days abroad will be counted as if they were living in Canada).

Any help? Is there a list of companies the Canadian government allows Engineers to work for a company abroad and yet be counted as living in Canada?

One thing to clarify, is that if you are abroad under qualifying conditions (like those you mentioned, or accompanying Cdn spouse abroad), these days will not count as time spent outside canada for the purpose of keeping your PR card, but not necessarily as days spent in canada for the purpose of gaining Cdn citizenship.

Days abroad are treated differently for these two different purposes.
