Not to rain on anyone's parade, but it is unlikley that a retail position would warrant the expense and legal fees to sponsor an H1-B. And while 16 years of retail does allow one to be eligible for h1-b, the position applied for would require a college graduate (not just prefernce).

An H1-B in retail is not automatic even if you do find a willing sponsor.

This is the kind of information i am looking for. It seems that my wife getting a job as an RN, even with all the red tape, time and expense is likely however the entire plan hinges on me getting a job within a reasonable amount of time, 6mo to a year would be my hope(maybe unrealistic).

May i ask what your background/experience is in this area? i really am looking for advice to help my wife and i decide if this is something we want to move forward with.

As nice as being a beach bum in Florida appeals to me i dont think we could afford a home on one salary.

11 years on these forums. Had TN H1 and now GC. Know how reluctant any firm is to hire a non-professional foreigner even in good times.

You just don't have the education/experience to get a job in US, nor do you work in a field that is in demand.

Now, if your wife finds someone who will sponser her for a GC pretty fast, you will get work authorization at some point, but not for a few years.

I doubt that whatever bump in salary she would get would make up for the loss of yours.

I have found a couple postings on the internet refering to potential changes to the TN1 visa, one of which is the possibility of a spouse being able to obtain employment under TD status. Does anyone have any informatn on this? it seems like this is an unlikely change since immigration is a very touchy subject in the US.

Any thoughts?

No. As you may know, canada allows the spouses of US/Mex workers who enter on NAFTA treaty to work, and have for years. Not a chance this will happen on TN however.
