Canadian Students Summer Work in US

Post Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:20 am

A young Canadian friend of mine, a university student, wants to work in New York for the summer and possibly take some art courses as well. Does anyone know what kind of documentation she needs and if she needs a job first?

Thanks a million.

Sounds like an M-1 or F-1 entry.

To be honest both M-1 and F-1 assume full-time courses of study, getting work authorization on a part-time course is basically impossible.

There's a remote possibility she could get H-2B and work in a hotel or something, but I doubt given the current economy there are any employers in NYC using H-2B or likely to be for the next couple of years.

If it's just a couple of art classes she can simply come in as a regular visitor, i.e. B-2, no paperwork needed other than a Canadian passport. But obviously you can't work as a visitor.
Steve.

Visas for hospitality would be difficult these days, the hospitality industry has been one of the hardest hit lately with this recession, and people are losing their jobs left and right.
