Canadian taxes or UK taxes?

Post Tue Jun 02, 2009 5:51 am

Hello to all,
I'm very grateful to have found this website; It contains a wealth of knowledge and advice and I hope that someone out there has some advice for me.
My situation is as follows: I am a civilian pilot and I currently fly for a Canadian airline in Afghanistan. In a given year I spend an average of 7 months in Afghanistan and 2-3 months in England with my partner. I spend 2-3 months a year traveling and only about 1-2 weeks in Canada to see family and to renew my training. I have dual citizenship with France and so I'm able to live and work in England when I'm not in Afghanistan.
I am currently a Canadian taxpayer but as I return to Canada for so little time, I'm seriously considering becoming a non-resident for tax purposes. I have investigated my options and I'm now wondering if it's worth severing ties with Canada.
I have read on the HMRC website that I can possibly qualify for the Remittance Basis of Taxation where my foreign salary would not be taxed unless I brought it into the UK. This seems quite advantageous for me although I'm sure there's a catch. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?
Would it be more advantageous for me to remain as a Canadian tax payer or should I consider severing ties and joining the ranks of UK taxpayers?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

You're definitely better off as a pilot moving your tax home out of Canada to the UK: living-a-transatlantic-lifestyle-and-the-tax-implications-vt6287.html?hilit=adelaide#p24377

No need to pay UK taxes either if you are here that little. Defo drop the Canadian residency though. What a waste of your money. Sever all ties though. No house in your name. No bank accounts. Exchange your driver's licence for a UK or French one. Recommended reading, 'take your money and run'.

BTW have you considered a JAR CPL?

You can have a house and bank accounts in Canada, you just need to make sure you've told the bank you're non-resident for tax purposes and the house cannot be your principal residence, i.e. it is subject to capital gains tax.
