Canadian Teacher wanting to work in USA

Postby tinaspots » Wed Nov 07, 2007 3:08 am

Does anyone know a faster or easier way for a Canadian elementary teacher to work in California other than a H-1B visa? My possible employer said that they do not do visas. There must be another way for a Canadian teacher to get a visa. I am in the process of getting my credentials checked.

If your potential employer does not want to sponsor you for a visa, then your only other option is get married to an American.

I work in California and I am an elementary teacher. When they recruited me, they submitted all the paperwork and paid for the HB1 Visa. So, if your employer is not going the fees, I think they atleast have to sponsor you in some way.

Where in California do you want to work? Do you know what the teaching system is like here?

I work in Fontana Unified, which is one hour from LA. A teacher at my school lives in Burbanka and commutes to our school every day, probably a 1.5 - 2 hour drive here and back with awful California traffic. When I say awful,,,I mean AWWWWWWWFUL.

The system is very strict. You have to stick to the curriculum and the texts they use. They are very concerned with test scores. The children where I teach come from very tough backgrounds, mostly ELD, poor families etc etc Therefore, the children have many behavior problems. There were quite a few extra tests, courses to take to fulfill your California Teaching Credential.

Hi Nala,
I am also a Canadian teacher living in the UK and interested in getting a visa to work in California. I was just wondering how you were recruited and if you know anyone who was sponsored to work in the San Francisco area?
