Canadian Teacher wanting to work in USA

Post Wed Nov 07, 2007 4:14 am

I am a Canadian elementary school teacher. I am trying to get a visa so I can work in California. Does anyone know of another way to get a visa other than the H-1B? My employer says that they will not do visas. Any ideas?
Help! Do I need to leave from Canada? Any loopholes because I am Canadian?

H-1B or J-1, you can't do a TN. You can do an H-1b now if the school is cap-exempt.

Canadian living in the UK looking to work in Cali

Post Thu Apr 03, 2008 5:10 am

Hi, I too am a Canadian living in the UK (London) and working as a Primary school teacher. I am also trying to get a visa to work in California. Did you manage to get that H-1B visa? Have you come across anyone who was successful in getting a school in the San Francisco area to sponsor them?

HI,
Did you get your H1-B visa to work /teach in California? I am wanting to go to New Jersey. How did you find a job there with someone to sponsor you? I am PE/Biology trained and want to move to NJ and know there are alot of jobs there, but want to know how other teachers go about finding ones who are willing to sponsor?

Still looking

Hi,
Unfortunately I am still trying to secure a job/visa to teach in California. I have made contact with a French Private School, but getting a visa looks like it might be tricky/expensive/time-consuming. The only advice I can give you is that it may be easier to try and work for a private school because they don't seem to be as strict about having a US teaching credential. Some school districts have a 'memorandum of understanding' with Canada to hire teachers so you could give different districts a call and find out if they know anything about this.
Good Luck!

There is a company called VIN, they will find you work in the USA. However,
you need to have a valid drivers license for at least 2 years

Do you have a link to the company website? I've come across a similar company, however they require 3 years teaching experience - as a new teacher, I don't have this. Is VIN the same?

Also, would it be best to apply for a temporary visa or a green card in this situation if I were to do it without the help of a company?
